Murray's Bagel

What we love…

  • Relatively new on the New York bagel scene, Murray's is becoming pretty well known for their traditional made boiled and baked bagels, and delicious cream cheese.
  • The inside is soft almost delicate, while the outside shines and manages to be both chewy and crunchy—just as a good bagel should be.
  • Part of what makes this place special is the story behind the owner. Former Wall Street guy with a soft spot for bagels seeks the best traditional methods to create tiny, chewy pieces of art.
  • The toppings are fresh, the cream cheese ( the spread or schmear depending on where you originate from) comes in many flavors, although sometimes it's not labeled. If there's something particular that your heart desires check out the full list on their website before you go so you get your perfect bagel.
  • Keep in mind traditional bagels aren't meant to be toasted so as a rule Murray's just doesn't toast. The idea here is that the bagels are so fresh you don't need them toasted.
  • The spread list is long with favorites such as scallion, walnut-raisin, roasted-garlic, and jalapeno, there's also a variety of tofu spreads as well if you're into that sort of thing. In the morning make sure you get the egg and cheese, it's delicious, but keep in mind they only serve breakfast until 1pm. After that try one of their specialty sandwiches such as the Rivington Street—smoked turkey or roast beef with swiss cheese and roasted pepper.
  • Table space is limited although this type of food is perfect for walking on a nice day so it's usually not a problem. Don't be surprised if the line up snakes around the restaurant and out the door, it's not uncommon especially on a weekend. But don't fear the guys behind the counter work at a fast pace and will keep the line moving.
  • Speaking of the guys behind the counter, you'll often read that the service is rude, and although it can come across somewhat curt, do keep in mind that the alternative is waiting 30 minutes to get your bagel. Now I don't know about you, but I'm not looking for a best friend here so I'll take a quick and curt over sweet and slow any day.
