Honolulu Coffee Shop

What we love…

  • Custard egg tarts! Honolulu Coffee Shop is a full service cafe, but we think there are better places in the city to get your coffee fix. Instead stop by their take-out window on street level and score one (or six) of their delicious custard egg tarts.
  • Custard egg tarts have been a popular treat in Hong Kong since the 1940's when Portugal introduced them to the city. These yummy tarts are made from shortcrust pastry that's stuffed with soft, eggy custard. Hong Kong has taken the classic Portuguese tart and put their own spin on it, which is why you'll often hear people refer to them as Hong Kong style tarts. The Portuguese tart is browned on top, the Hong Kong style tarts are served without the caramelization, so you get a softer more steamed effect. We tend to lean more toward the traditional Portuguese version, but when in Rome…
  • Today you can find these tarts at just about any dim sum restaurant or tea house, but there are only a few places in the city that specialize in them and Honolulu is one of them.
